Friday morning we said a sad goodbye to Lisbon, carted our luggage along the (thankfully flat) cobblestone streets, past the Timeout Market to the metro station, and hightailed it to the airport to collect our rental car. There sure is a lot of waiting around and paperwork at these car rental places, so thankfully because we have an infant, we were in the priority queue. The Portuguese do seem to respect those with a young child, thank God. Even London and Bangkok did. Just not Sydney it seems.
We got the car, and after Ryan worked out how to install the baby seat (they don't take any responsibility for that so make you do it yourself) we headed towards Sesimbra, a small beach resort town just an hour or so south of Lisbon. We were staying in an Air BnB in the centro just near the beach, so finding the joint was a bit tricky with so many narrow one way roads and Google not knowing the correct lay of the land. But we made it eventually, as we always do. And thankfully the sun had come out! Hooray! Time for tshirts and thongs!
We may have been a little overly optimistic because the breeze had quite an Atlantic chill going on, but we were happy to see blue skies, so at least for an hour we were all sun's out, guns out.
For dinner we were keen on some seafood, for a change haha, so TripAdvisor lead us to a hole in the wall place where the guy tells you what fish they had that day and you choose! It was delicious, and we enjoyed it in peace yet again thanks to Peppa Pig.
The next morning we drove up to the nearby castle which had stunning views over Sesimbra. Unfortunately, in an effort to get a family selfie for tinybeans, Ryan's back gave out a bit, immediately bringing back unpleasant memories of Ryan's back injury in Spain in 2012. Thank God we'd learned our lesson and had Voltaren on hand.
We had then intended on a drive through the adjacent national park, but with Ryans back a bit unpredictable, I did not want to get stuck in the middle of a desolate national park with Ryan not being able to drive. So we played it safe and went back to town for the rest of the afternoon. We had noticed several sushi placed in town, which of course caught my eye, so we went to Atlantic Sushi for lunch. Not being high season and the weather being so cool, it was quiet. The waitress pointed us to a sushi platter, and since Ryan wanted some hot food too we got some gyōza and yakisoba noodles. Unbeknownst to us the sushi platter was ginormous. I've been known to put a lot of sushi away in my time but even this was too much of a challenge. I think we only left 3 or 4 pieces behind in the end, so I think my sushi fix is satisfied until the end of the trip.
We sushi rolled out of there for some chill time at the apartment, before heading back down to the promenade for a seaside evening drink and dinner. Luckily Willow was able to eat most of it coz we were still stuffed!
