Same-cationing

Because we loved TeamLab's Borderless exhibition so much, we decided to go to their other exhibit, Planets, as well. This one is a "temporary" exhibit, open for another year, and unlike Borderless where it was a myriad of rooms with no map or route so the intention was for you to get lost, Planets is a bit more orderly where everyone follows a set path. That meant you could buy tickets where you get admitted in 30 minute timeslots so there wasn't too many people or too much of a queue.

So without too much fuss we were in, and getting the briefing on what was going to go down. Everyone was going to have to take their shoes off and roll up their pants as at one stage we were going to be wading through knee-deep water! Willow was thrilled to be able to kick off her shoes without me berating her this time, so with our belongings tucked away in a locker, we set off into the Planets exhibit. Through a dark corridor and around a corner, up a ramp with water tumbling down it! Willow thought it was great.

Up the top we were then each handed a small towel to dry our feet, because that's how they do in Japan. Then onwards along a dark corridor into the next room. The floor was one massive beanbag, all lumpy, and was impossible to walk on so you had to crawl along it which was actually quite difficult but hilarious so everyone was struggling along in fits of giggles. Willow loved it, and managed pretty well - only jumped on my and Ryan's back a couple of times which made it completely impossible to move!

On to the next room, which was a forest of LED lights on long strings, which was very similar to a room at Borderless but still mesmorising all the same. And then the next room, the one where you descend into water up to your knees (Willow of course had to be carried) and then enter a large room with beautiful works of art projected onto and into the water, so that you feel like fish (koi) and other creatures are actually swimming around your legs. The patterns that were created were based on a computer-generated model, so that the koi not only interacted with each other but with the people moving through the exhibit, so that in fact the patterns that were created were never the same. It was a stunning exhibit, and I'm sure we could have spent a lot more time in there had Willow not been trying to dive head first into the water to catch the fish!!

The next room was a big mirrored room of huge balloons that changed colour every few seconds so that everyone was bouncing around in between never-ending rainbow balloons. Willow really loved this one, and since it wasn't so dark, the photos turned out the best ;P

Finally the last room was like being in a big planetarium where you lie down on the floor and the ceiling above you feels like you are floating through space with huge beautiful flowers, all accompanied with a cinematic soundtrack. It was stunning! And so that was Planets. Completely amazing. If ever TeamLabs brings another exhibit to Australia I will definitely be going!

Earlier in the day we had realised it was actually a public holiday (some Culture Day was on the Sunday, the day before, so the Monday was a public holiday), and although Planets was just down the road from the fish markets that had recently moved to Toyosu, they were closed so we couldn't swing by and check out the new restaurant section they have there. Oh well, onto the train and back to Shimbashi for some lunch. We wandered around, and after Ryan picked up a red bean fish pancake tipici de la region (taiyaki), we found a little place for lunch that had a fish tank and little grills at each table! I got a bowl of tuna sashimi and rice, and Ryan got some other white fish sashimi on rice as well as a crab miso (served in the crab) that he had to cook on the grill. It was pretty rich!

After lunch we headed back home and Willow had her first day nap actually in the bed!! She has been a trooper napping in the dinky stroller! After a couple of hours we headed back out towards Roppongi Tower for a view from the top observatory, but there was a 40 minute wait, I guess being a public holiday, so we decided to hold for another night and then on the way to dinner stumbled across an Italian bar with some al fresco dining, so I enjoyed an espresso martini, and Ryan enjoyed a chilled red wine haha.

For dinner, we went back to the place that we had really liked on Saturday night, called Men-shou Taketora, and tried some new dishes like eggplant with miso and cheese, and grilled seafood in a deliciously creamy sauce. So yum! And Willow got a free juice and little snack bowl again. The food there was awesome and very reasonably priced. So then home to bed for a good night's sleep as we had an early start the next morning!!!
